can't play .wav file

Hi,

I'm having a really irritating problem with a program for learning another
language. There are sound (.wav) files in the package that I just can't hear
;

" Error in MCI command 'open "D:\data\audio\o000\o000042.wav" alias
mcic12018 type WaveAudio wait'

No wave device is installed that can play files in the current format.

Of course there is a device that plays wave files, it's my creative sound
card and plays wave files (such as the windows sound scheme) without a
problem.

If I browse to the folder in the CD containing the wave files then I can
play them, but every time I use the program and click on "listen" I get the
error above.

I updated all the drivers for my soundcard, I checked the default player for
wave files ( Windows Media Player) and now I am stuck...

Thanks in advance

Have you queried the folks who created the course? Ask them why sounds
can be summoned from their CD, but won't play when linked via the program.

Yes I harrassed them for a while - all they could suggest was that I
upgraded the drivers for my sound card.. Did that - no effect...

Trouble is I'm not convinced that it's definitely a prob with the software,
because it is working on other PCs with the same OS. I got a different CD
from a classmate and while it was working in her PC, I got the same error
message on mine..

I am using XP PRO with SP1 installed. I've got all the usual codecs ( is it
possible there can be a conflict between codecs or media players ?)

(e-mail address removed)

thanks for your interest
