Can't play MP3

M

ms

W2K SP4

I had previously no problem playing a MP3 music file with my music utility,
1by 1 runs fine in W2K. It is setup to open MP3 files. Last time I played a
file was about 2 months ago.

Today, I select the file, get error screen "Play init error", the actual
error message is "Wave OutOpen".

I run my system 24/7, no crashes, no changes (AFAIK).

What is wrong?

How to fix it?

TIA

It sounds like a problem with "1by 1", whatever that is. What happens
when you play the file with Media Player or Quicktime, or Winamp, or
some other program?

I tried another sound utility, "can't open sound device", when I click on
that, "unknown file format (for mp3)". I checked in folder options/file
types, MP3 shows, opens with 1by1 player.

I just tried WMP, "no audio hardware found"

Is this starting to sound like a builtin sound board on my motherboard, 5
months old, is going bad?

Advice?

Just noticed, my windows sound icon is missing from the system tray.

This indicates?

Hey ms,

The sound icon missing from your system tray could mean nothing since
you can set it to show up in the system tray or not via Start
Manu->Settings->Control Panel->Sound and Multimedia. However, I do
believe it also goes away if the system driver for your sound card is
having problems (MVP confirm?). I would look at Control
Panel->System->Harware Tab->Device Manager... for any issues with your
harware. Ensure that when you look at the properties for your sound
device is says "This device is work properly."

Thanks.

I would fetch the latest drivers for your sound card, then uninstall
all sound card devices from windows, and reboot. Hopefully Windows will
detect the card upon reboot and ask for the drivers, which you can then
feed to it.

Thanks, Adam.

In Device Manager, there are no funnies, everything looks fine. However,
the properties screen under my RealTek AC97 audio says: Your registry
might be corrupted.(Code 19)? No clue to look into this.

The rest of the data- properties screen lists audio and midi but the
properties button is greyed out. I can't see properties which indicates
something. Driver screen gives the version and date of the Realtek
driver, resources show no conflict.

In the Sound and Media, the box for show sound icon is by default already
checked and greyed out.

The sound icon was there since the setup 4 months ago, sometime recently
it vanished and now I can't play music files.
