mp3 files corrupted by CHKDSK?

W

Wayne McCallum

I have a recurring problem so I must being do something
wrong.

I have a 200GB NTFS partition with numerous mp3 files on
it. Occasionally I will get a message "Partition is
corrupted. Run CHKDSK."
After I reboot and CHKDSK runs, the mp3 files are still
on the partition but Windows Media Player (WMP) will no
longer play them (nor will MusicMatch JukeBox). Windows
Explorer indicates they are mp3 files but WMP says "This
file has the wrong extension" and will then not play it.

I solve the problem by re-ripping the original music CD
and creating a new mp3 file which works fine. After 3-4
weeks, I get the "Partition is corrupted. Run CHKDSK"
message again and the problem recurs.

What can I do to prevent this? Thanks.

Try downloading and running a disk diagnostic from the drive manufacturer's
web site. Also check for an updated driver for your drive controller from
the manufacturer's web site.
