Can't ping or share with some XP Home machines

M

Michael Listman

Have a 5 XP Home, computer network connected through a
Linksys BEFSR81 router using DHCP through a Westell 2200
DSL modem. All PCs can access the internet perfectly.

PC1 can ping PC2 but not PC3-PC5, can ping itself and the
router. All PCs can be seen in Network Neighborhood, but
unpingable PCs cannot be browsed by PC1 (and vise versa).
When trying to browse a PC (e.g. My Network Places\Entire
Network\Microsoft Windows Network\MSHome\PC3) the computer
hangs for about 2 minutes then responds with "\\PC3 is not
accessible. You may not have permission... Access Denied"

File and Printer Sharing, Client for MS Networks, NWLink,
and TCP/IP are installed on all machines.

"Use simple file sharing" is not listed as an option under
Folder Options\View.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling all
clients\services\protocols in networking, have used the
Network Setup Wizard, have tried static and dynamic IPs,
have checked and unchecked every box I can find.

What am I missing or overlooking?

First of all can PC2 ping PC3-PC5? If not, I would first
make sure everything is physically connected properly and
all of the ethernet cards are working properly. Then I
would check the permissions on PC3-PC5 and make sure that
the firewall is not enabled and all of the machines
network configurations are the same. Also you could try
to look at the settings on your router and even try
resetting it.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Consider the following:

1. The most common thing that stops ping from working is a firewall.

2. Hand crimped network cables can produce bizarre network problems.
Use factory molded cables if you don't have the tools to test your
crimps.

3. I haven't pinned this down exactly, but sometimes the masterbrowser can
get
corrupted. You can correct this by shuting down all machines and then
starting them up again.

4. Are you connecting this network to a Novell server? Is that why NWLink
is
installed. If not, remove NWLink.

Good Luck,
Michael

XP PRO offers a choice between "simple file sharing" and
"bloody complicated but pretty secure file sharing". XP HE
only offers "simple file sharing", which is why you don't
see any option with XP HE.

{I kinda think that M$ has an alternative description for
"bloody complicated but pretty secure file sharing", but mine
emphasizes the difference, eh?}
