Can't ping gateway after setup completes

I recently upgraded a computer from Windows ME to XP SP2 and can not ping the
gateway after startup is complete. The computer is connected via ethernet to
a DSL modem and I can access the internet through Internet Explorer. Also,
when you restart the computer, before the Windows Networking shows up in the
taskbar, you can ping the gateway. After Windows completes the startup, ping
fails with error 65.

fails with error 65.

Error 65 is usually caused by an improperly configured firewall
program (ZoneAlarm, Norton, McAfee, PCCillin, etc).

Un-install (don't just disable) any firewall program, then go to Start
| Run | Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of the firewall.
Then try pinging and other network functions. If they work, you can
re-install the firewall program.
