I have Xp Professional and have recently been experiecing problems logging
on. When I turn on my system the computer, I see the XP logo and then the
screen goes blank while the desktop runs and the power button for the screen
goes from green to orange, but nothing happens. I have tried using system
restore to no avail. I have defragmented the system. I use Spy sweeper,
Norton Antivirus and recently I installed zone alarm all of the products are
current and have been used to sweep the computer of viruses and spyware.

Hi Mark,

To troubleshoot this issue I would start by booting into Safe Mode and run the MSCONFIG utility from
Start/Run. This will allow you to do a Selective Startup and hopefully figure out where the issue is when
you run a normal boot. First, deselect all the files and startup items in the list. Reboot...if everything is
ok add back one of the items and repeat. This should give you the location of the offending
drive/process and allow you to drill down til its found.

I think I had thaHi David,

I did as you instructed; however I wasn't able to identify any problems that
way. I later ran Micro Trends free virus scan, which identified 10 Trojan
viruses that I deleted. I seem to be affected by the glitch in SP2 that was
mentioned in Microsoft's security bulletin regarding GDI. I am back to
square one again in that I can't get the computer to boot up. I am even
having trouble getting it to boot up in the safe mode. Do I need to delete
XP and reinstall? If so, please provide instructions.

Thank you,
Mark
