can't open the imported lost e-mails in XP Mail Folder

I did the whole process for recovering the lost e-mails into the XP Mail
Folder that the knowledge base articles said to create. The folders appear on
the list so I know they're there, but I can't open them. I get an error box
telling me to download something that will open the "*.dbx" files as "Windows
can't open" them, but all I get are sites trying to get even more money out
of me.
There must be another way. Thanks for any advice.

It might help if you provided some additional information, such as links
to the knowledge base articles you said you followed.
