I tried to open a spreadsheet that I've been using for some time. I got a
message: "file format is not valid". Did I do something wrong when I last
used the file? How can I open the file? If I don't know what's wrong, I
hesitate to open any of my excel files for fear that It may happen again.
Maybe I'll print all of my important files for safe keeping.

Check that the file extension is correct for that type of
file. We have had an instance where one of our guys
managed to save an excel .xls file as a word .doc file
from within office. It was still in the excel format and
opened ok after fixing the file extension, but obviously
threw up the usual problems while opening with word.

Took a while to figure it out. (And he still persists in
doing it after being told)!

The only other cause may be the hard drive on your PC is
corrupt, in which case it may become impossible to fix!!
Try going for a backup copy or an earlier version.
