Can't open photos

K

I haven't had a problem with people being able to open attachments but as of
today I am finding that people are having trouble opening my photo
attachments. I am not getting an error message. They seem to be sending
fine. Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
Kheali

Send some to your own email address and see if you can open these
attachments.
If you can but they can't, they may be missing some software needed to open
these file types. In that case, tell us the part of the file names starting
with the
last period, and what version of Windows or other operating system the
people
having problems are using.

I tried sending a photo to myself and I couldn't open it! I assume that
means it is my error. Thoughts?

Do you close all programs that access the pictures before you send
them? If not, Windows Mail often has trouble adding the attachment.

Did it arrive large enough to contain the picture file?

When you view the message that arrived, do you see a paperclip
near the top right corner of the message? If so, click on it and see
if the correct file name came though. If it did, try to save this file,
but in a different directory than the one you sent the file from.
If you can, try to open the file outside Windows Mail and tell us
what happens. There's the possibility that you have the correct
software to open such files, but Windows Mail does not know
how to pass the file over to that correct software. If this has
happened, tell us the part of the file name after the last period
and what program was able to open the file.

Hi Robert,
What programs would I close? I am usually just in Windows Mail and pull up
the pictures that I want to attach.

Any other programs that have accessed the picture. If they're already
closed
and you are trying to attach the picture files, it should work. However,
there's
more than one format to store pictures in, so that's why we need the part
of the file name after the last period.

Ok...if I am understanding you right Robert, I am using Vista and the file
name after the last period is .jpg. Is that what you need?

Just make sure you don't have those photos open in some
other program when you are trying to attach those photos to an
outgoing message.

Were you ever able to see photos in a received message?
If not, go to Tools, Options, Security, uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."
and uncheck "Block images..."

Hi Gary,
Yes, I have been able to see photos in a received message. It just became a
problem the last 2 days. Forgive me if this is a "duh" question but what
other program might my photos be opened in?

Double click on Control Panel on your desktop, then Default Programs,
then click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Wait for
the list to load then go down the list to .jpg. Make sure the entry in the
Current Default program for it is a program able to open .jpg files. I use
Windows Photo Gallery. If you need to change the program, click on
..jpg, then Change Program, then a suitable program, then OK, then Close,
then close the Default Programs window. This should select the correct
program for opening the file outside Windows Mail; if it doesn't also select
the correct program for use inside Windows Mail, you'll need someone else
to take over helping you.

To make sure Windows Mail will try to open such attachments, click on
Tools, then Options, then Read. If there is a checkmark in the box before
Read all messages in plain text, click on this box, then Apply. Click on
Send, then the HTML Settings for Mail Sending Format. If there's no
check mark in the box before Send pictures with messages, click on this
box. Click on OK, then Apply, then OK. Restart Windows Mail and try
to open the email again.

Also, is the email that came in at least as big as the picture file?

Yes, Robert, I would say they are pretty close in size...does that make a big
difference?

It makes it appear that the received message actually contains the
attachment,
so you only have to worry about how to display it after it arrives.

Ok, I think I get it. I will give it a try. If I may ask another question,
I have checked the box to keep a copy of my emails on my server but it
doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

A few email providers have set their email servers to ignore requests to
leave a copy of messages on the server after you download them. In
this case, it won't work. I think gmail.com is one of them.

If that's not the problem, it may help to remove the checkmark, then
click Apply, then put the checkmark back, then click Apply again.

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program occasionally create new
problems in Windows Mail, so if it's not the cause of your current problem,
you're likely to have another problem within months.

For such problems, it sometimes helps to remove your email account
under Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account
again. This is a temporary fix if it works, though.

Robert,
Thank you Robert. I think your photo attachment fix worked...so far so
good!!! I was able to send an email to myself and open it. Next I will try
to send one to someone else. Also I unchecked and rechecked the copy to
server box so I will have to see if it solves the problem. My server is
Comcast. I have had an interesting development while doing all of this but I
will start a new thread!!
Thank you again for your time,
Kheali

K

Yeah, I know...Robert, you suggested I uninstall McAfee and try a different
AV about a month ago in another thread..and well...it hasn't happened so I
have no one to blame but me!
Thanks,
Kheali
