can't open .pdf or .doc attachments in email

I CAN open .wmv attachments, but I CAN'T open .doc or .pdf
attachments!! I'm using Yahoo! mail and Internet Explorer 8 (provided
by Yahoo!) on my XP Home Edition computer. After clicking on "download
attachment" and "run", the pop up window just keeps showing the little
piece of paper travelling to the file folder--no status bar, no
destination file name, no nothing--and it stays that way indefinitely.
I've tried everything Yahoo has suggested (unclick Enable 3rd party
browsers, delete cookies &
cache and even disabling my auto-protect) to no avail. I've even tried
saving instead of opening, with the same results. Help! Please keep in
mind that I can follow instructions in English, not in computer-
ese ) Thanks!

You do have Acrobat reader and Word or another program that reads doc files
installed dont you?

Well, given what you have - the answer is fairly straight-forward.

You need to install applications that can open the file types you have give.

For example - Microsoft Word Viewer to read the .doc files.
For example - Adobe Acrobate Reader to read the .pdf files.

Without applications to open documents of a given type - well - you cannot
open documents of that given type. ;-)

Now - if you are saying you cannot save the documents to your computer
(your, "I've even tried saving instead of opening" statement might lead one
to such a conclusion...) - try using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

By default, can't Windows XP handle .doc files with Wordpad?

Do you have a download problem or an open problem?

Wordpad seems to work okay on the couple .doc files I tried to open.
I don't know what would happen if I modified it and saved it - would
it ever open again in MS Word?

Can you download the .doc files to your desktop or folder and then
right click the file, Open With, Wordpad?

Once you get a .doc file downloaded, and double click it, Windows will
try to open it with the program that is associated with .doc files
(usually MS Word). This association is based on the file extension
and can be changed. You can associate .doc files with Wordpad if that
is what you need to do.

PDF files don't seem to work with Wordpad, but I am not surprised.
The Adobe Reader is free to download for your .PDF files.
