can't open attachments in .doc format

When I receive a .doc attachment, I can't open it from the email. I get the
message "the file cannot be found." If I save the attachment to a folder
then try to open it, I am able to. Why won't it open directly from the email?

Maybe this article will help:

What does IE8 have to do with the OP's issue here.

This is the fix below and was posted 2 hrs before you by John Inzer MS-MVP

That's a known issue that is affecting some who installed IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
If you decide to uninstall IE8, follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Instead of uninstalling IE8, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail:

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do the following, does the behavior persist?

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) & OK your way
out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.

The error reported by the OP ("file cannot be found") is one of the
known signatures of the IE8 attachments issue. The fix cited below, however,
is for a different attachment issue, one where the error message says
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

The specific fix I recommend depends on what the error message says.

A lot! ;-)
Obviously - according to the reported error message - it's the
IE8-WinMail bug and not a problem with the file type association.

AFAICS John made a mistake. The article for which he posted a reference
gas nothing to do with the OP's problem.
