i just ran scanpst (finally got it to work) and it says it repaired the file.
now i get the message "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open
the Outlook window." any ideas on how to fix this? same thing happens when
i try to open it in safe mode.

The pst-file could still be corrupted or was corrupted to such a degree that
it can no longer be used as a default message store. You might want to
create a test mail profile and attach your recovered pst-file to it to see
what is still in there.
For instructions on how to create an additional mail profile and add your
original pst-file to it see;

great - that worked. thanks! and i was able to access my old messages. the
file got corrupted when i was deleting messages from the deleted messages
folder. makes me kind of hesitant to do it again!

Start Outlook once with the /resetnavpane command switch.

You're welcome! :)
If the file doesn't come up with errors anymore via scanpst.exe, you should
be good again. Of course, it never hurts to have a proper backup at all
times ;-)
