can't open due to unknown error

Whne opening new e-mail messages sometimes get error box stating "cannot open
this item due to unknown error". Shut down outlook and reopen allows the
message to be opened.
 
What version of Outlook? What is your email environment (POP3, Exchange)? Do
you use a PST?
