Can't open an excel file in Explorer

when I double click on an Excel file in explorer I receive
the following message, "Cannot find the file "C\Documents
and Settings\Geoff\My Documents\file.xls' (or one of its
components). Make sure the path and filename are correct
and that all required libraries are available."

However, if I drag the file to the Excel desktop icon it
will open just fine. Of course, if I open Excel and locate
the file through the program it will also work just fine.

Any help?

Assuming you are talking about Excel 2000. You might try
opening Excel, go to Tools >> Options >> remove checkmark
from "Ignore other applications".
