can't open a site.

{sigh} I'm just wanting to create or open a new site on my laptop. that's
all.

XP pro / Frontpage 2003

In frontpage, I use "open site" and point to localhost. I get the following
message:
"The Web server at http://localhost does not appear to have Windows
SharePoint Services installed."
I also get this message when using "new site" to create a one page web site
a a http://localhost/newsite.

In the IIS MMC, right click on the default website, - all tasks - open with
frontpage results in:
"You need to install the FrontPage client software to open a web with
FrontPage."

I can use Frontpage on the laptop to open sites hosted on other computers.

What's up? How do I find out which version of server extensions I am running
& should be running? I assume that's my next step.

I believe you first need to create local web before you can open it.

FrontPage > File > New > Page or Web

You must have the FP server extensions installed and configured.
XP Pro, which comes with IIS 5.1, also comes with FP 2000 extensions by
default. However, you must install IIS 5.1 and you must install the
extensions (from the add/remove in Control Panel). Then, you must configure
them using all tasks in the IIS MMC for the web site.

If you choose to use the FP 2002 extensions, you will need to download them
plus the large amount of patches, hotfixes, updates from the MS site.
