Yikes! All of a sudden, I can't open any second page in Frontpage 2002 or click on a link without getting a fault causing Frontpage to close. I did move my sites to a new computer a couple of weeks ago and reinstalled Frontpage 2002 with all of the current updates. Used it succesfully with no problem after that. Nothing new in Frontpage or my website pages since then. Not other problems that I've found in other MS programs or any other programs...only Frontpage. Using WinXP SP1; Office XP SP3.

HELP!!!

-sd

PS A follow up to this. I've now totally uninstalled and reinstalled Frontpage. I've started Windows in Safe Mode...nothing else running on the machine. And STILL get this fault. I can open one page. Then, even if I close that page, as soon as I try to open a second or click on a link, Fault! <sigh>

How did you move the site from the old computer to the new computer?

I installed Frontpage on the new computer, then moved all of my data files to the new computer as well.

One other problem found tonight. When opening web pages in IE6SP1, I seem to be getting an occasional 'debug' error that points to a java line. I don't have enough expertise to know if there is any relation to the Frontpage fault. <?>

You need to publish them either from the old machine or from the live site the new machine in order
to maintain the web structure.

Can you help me understand why I can't use the same data folders with the new copy of FP? Is there something behind the scenes going on that isn't obvious?

I can't pull down from the live site as it is an ftp site and FP doesn't seem to support that. I did try publishing the site from the old directory, but trying to use the files in the new folder causes the same fault.

See Jim Buyens reply to your prior post.

I've been trying to follow his advice, but as I wrote, my hosting server is an ftp server and does not allow me to attach to it via http, so I can't publish from the live site. I DID, however, use WS-FTP to download the site to my computer...but lost the navigation & shared borders. As soon as I attempted to add a shared border back in to these pages, I got the same "Frontpage has encountered a problem and needs to close' message.

I'm really stuck. I need to update our .org site and am off the air until I can find a fix to this!

When you download the site via FTP to your computer, what folder did you place it in?

The problem with publishing to a server that doesn't have the FP extensions, is that if you ever
loose your local copy and have download a copy via FTP back to your machine, is that you will have
reapply any themes, recreate your navigation structure/links and shared borders.

Nothing special...just a standard folder. I then did a 'convert to web' on the folder. Unfortunately, when I then attempted to add a shared border, I got the same 'needs to close' error. Thoughts?

PS Thanks for sticking with me on this!

Are you saying the you download the content directly into a open FP web or that you put it in a
folder on your HD, then open that folder via FP?

The second way above is the correct way.

I put it into a plain non-web folder. Then in FP, did a 'convert to web' on the folder.

In the last hour, I installed a temporary copy of FP on my WinXP laptop and copied the web into the My Webs folder (as a subweb I guess). The first page that I opened worked fine, then got the same error message when opening a second page. What I'm hoping is that I've eliminated any OS or machine-specific problem??? What the machines have in common is WinXPsp1, IE6sp1, OfficeXPsp3 and all of the lastest Windows OS and Office patches. I also tried opening another of my websites, however, and it too caused a fault in the same way, so it doesn't 'appear' that it is simply a matter of a corrupted site.

The event viewer shows the following: Faulting application frontpg.exe version 10.0.2623.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00037e00.

This has been pretty consistent, except that the fault address varies.

Does any of this ring any bells for you?

If you can open the at all, then as your first act, try choosing
Recalculate Hyperlinks from the Tools menu.

Thanks. That occurred to me too & I tried that--and gave it a go again on the laptop just now--but to no avail. -sd

When you FTP'd it, did you include your old shared borders folder
- if so before you open it in FP rename the shared border files in the _borders folder
- then delete any and all _vt* files/folders and _derived folders (if you had or FTP'd them)

Then do some system clean up

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Clear your IE cache (temp files),
6) Open your folder as a FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

This was helpful... here's where I've ended up. I followed ALL of your instructions and ended up with a web folder with all of my files, graphics, etc. I can open multiple pages with no fault.

I find I can add back in the shared borders with no faults. However, as soon as I add a navigation bar to the shared borders, I'm zapped with the same problem. If I then take out the navigation bar, I'm okay.

Does this help?

Are you adding a nav bar based on Navigation
- do you have any pages in Nav view and are the file names (not titles in nav view) legal (w/o any punctuation or spaces in file
names)

Yes. I first added all of my top level pages to the navigation view, then added the nav bar. Then after I'd had my next crash and was trying to pin down where this was happening, went through these steps:

1. cleared everything as per your previous instructions (except for reinstalling IE again)
2. added top, left and bottom borders...and tested opening a few pages.
3. added a graphic banner into the top border and tested.
4. added a left side nav bar and tested...this is where the fault reappeared.
5. after reopening FP, I removed the nav bar and retested...and could open multiple pages again.

Unless there's some other coincidental thing going on, somewhere/somehow this seems to be related to the navigation. (I did recalculate hyperlinks several times during this process.) Is it possible that in moving all of the files/folders from the original machine's HDD to this one, something is deep in the background related to where everything lives?

(All of my program data (for all programs) live in one main directory off the root. When I copied the data over, the entire directory was copied. No names were changed in the process...all are legal with respect to no-spaces and punctuation. )

Are you adding a nav bar based on Navigation
- do you have any pages in Nav view and are the file names (not titles in nav view) legal (w/o any punctuation or spaces in file
names)

| This was helpful... here's where I've ended up. I followed ALL of your instructions and ended up with a web folder with all of my
files, graphics, etc. I can open multiple pages with no fault.
|
| I find I can add back in the shared borders with no faults. However, as soon as I add a navigation bar to the shared borders, I'm
zapped with the same problem. If I then take out the navigation bar, I'm okay.
|
| Does this help?

Using Windows Explorer Make sure the folders / files you "moved" do not have any read only attributes still set (if moved from a CD)

Apply the theme ("radius 110") as a default to all pages and not just the link bar
- on the link bar select default theme instead of a custom theme
- that feature requires a sever running the FP SE

| I have a PS to this. I find that after step 4, I can open a page that is NOT on the navigation view yet and not get a fault. It's
only when I attempt to open a page that is on the nav view/nav links bar that the fault occurs.
|
| If you'd like to look at the original source code of the website (if that would help), it's www.tiburonsoccer.org

Hmmmm. This is VERY interesting. They are ALL tagged as 'read only.' And, if I uncheck the read only box, they STAY read only. What's going on here?

I checked all of my websites' files and they're all like that. This includes a set of files that I ftp'd from the live site this morning as well as the files that were copied over from the other HDD.

| Yes. I first added all of my top level pages to the navigation view, then added the nav bar. Then after I'd had my next crash and
was trying to pin down where this was happening, went through these steps:
|
| 1. cleared everything as per your previous instructions (except for reinstalling IE again)
| 2. added top, left and bottom borders...and tested opening a few pages.
| 3. added a graphic banner into the top border and tested.
| 4. added a left side nav bar and tested...this is where the fault reappeared.
| 5. after reopening FP, I removed the nav bar and retested...and could open multiple pages again.
|
| Unless there's some other coincidental thing going on, somewhere/somehow this seems to be related to the navigation. (I did
recalculate hyperlinks several times during this process.) Is it possible that in moving all of the files/folders from the original
machine's HDD to this one, something is deep in the background related to where everything lives?
