Can't open a new window from a link

When i click on a link that opens a new browser I get 'Page cannot be
Displayed'. I can't then use this instance of the browser for anything.

Having read various other posts this sounds like it is caused by spybot and
or adaware. So i removed them both and tried again, no joy. I reloaded
spybot and it informed that adaware was still on the machine, so i am left
with the problem and seemingly no way to scrub off the two likely causes.

IS there another possible cause? How can i purge the system of ADAware and
Spybot? Are they in fact the problem?

John,

I too am experiencing a similar problem. When I click on
a link within an email or a link with in a chat dialog or
even the "post reply" link to this very message board I
get nothing! No response at all from IE. ( I had to use
another PC to post this message)

When in Yahoo chat and I click on a link I am instructed
that I should go to Tools> Folder Options and associate
file with an application. That doest make sense to me!!
When I right click on a link with in an email it does not
appear to have hyper-link properties.

This has been going on for a few days now and very
disruptive !! I would appreciate and my boss would
appreciate any help with this problem .

Thanks. Dan

Try repairing the Winsock connection. Paste this link
into your windows explorer if IE doesn't work and look at
the tools listed at the very bottom of the page:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

--------------

Start/Run/[CMD for XP]. Type this command: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL. Ok/Reboot.
Then go to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to
URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit. Under Application used to
perform action it should read:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Thanks for your help Steve, unfortunately having tried everything that you
suggest the browser still won't behave. Launching the browser and
following links works fine until the link opens a new window, either by
design or if i press shift when i click the link.

Fisrt of all i committed a cardinal sin and rushed and screwed up the whole
machine, no winsock at all, but i was abale after some head scratching and a
beer to find the restore function. Then....

I followed the ms knowledge base article to the letter, then i checked the
registry
i then reinstalled ie6, or tried to it can't have been a reinstall, way too
quick.
Finally i tried the link to cexx, downloaded their xp utility, no dice
I have checked the url:hypertext settings - all correct

I tried to repair the XP installation but the oem disk has no serial number
so i can't use that until i contact the vendor and get the necessary.

Any other thoughts?

Not sure if this will help every situatiion BUT it did help me.

In control panel - uninstall software - delete Yahoo companion and any Yahoo
explorer toolbars. I did keep Yahoo Instant Msgr withou any problems. I also
delete Google thinking that might be the problem. Then I restarted IE6 and
all was fixed. I installed Google tool bar and it still works.

I tried to repair the XP installation
....

Try an IE Repair instead.

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

(You will only be able to do that if you installed IE6sp1 before XPsp1.)

Alternatively, I have been suggesting to XP users that they could simulate
the IE Repair that W2K users can do by making a list of all the references
to DllInstall and DllRegisterServer in FixIE.inf

For example, here is the list that W2K use of that file would imply:
(excerpt from previous post)

<excerpt>
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf
but those are two other modules which are often suggested to XP users
as needing re-registration for repairing in various circumstances.

Note that such re-registrations are normally done by an IE Repair
during a boot while nothing is running so at the very least I think
that it would be best to ensure that iexplore.exe is not active in your
task list. (Close all visible IE windows and then check that the
iexplore.exe is not in the list of Processes in Task Manager.
Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i,...)
</excerpt>

Related to this, recently some OE users have discovered
that there is a need to re-register inetcomm.dll. (We're not sure
why but there is some speculation that use of a Norton product
may be a common factor.)

Good luck
