Can't move emails to different folders

G

Guest

I recently formatted a client's hard drive and installed Windows 98 SE and
Internet Explorer 6. I then restored his emails from a backup by using the
import function in Outlook Express. He has multiple folders set up for a
variety of emails and I imported all of those folders. However, he is now
unable to move an email from the inbox to another folder. He highlights the
email, then goes to Edit and either Move to Folder or Copy to Folder, but
when the Move or Copy box pops up, it is empty. I have never run across this
before, so I'm at a loss. Any help is appreciated.

Try compacting all folders
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact). (Chances are the
folders weren't compacted before the backup was created, another No No.)

If still no joy, close OE and move Inbox.dbx to another, non-OE Windows
folder. Use one of the following utilities to extract messages from the
moved file. Any messages recovered (don't set your hopes too high) may be
dragged into an open OE folder (drag to the folder in Folders pane).

Avoid Such Corruption in Future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thanks for the response. I had my client do as you suggested, but it didn't
work. When he chooses a message and goes to Edit|Move to Folder, it still
displays a blank window (without any folder choices). Any other suggestions?

The user's current Identity sounds like it's been damaged, especially if its
the default Main Identity. Create a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add
new identity) and try *dragging* recovered messages to a folder in this
identity.

Assuming all is well, compact all folders in the old Identity and then
import its messages into the new identity before deleting it
(File>Identities>Manage Identities).

Worked like a charm. Thanks for all of your help. I was totally stumped and
now I've learned something new. I appreciate it.
