Can't Logon to W2K - Netlogon File Missing

Ran the Eraser program, and computer crashed. Now can't logon to W2K
because the Netlogon file is gone. Any suggestions?

We've no idea what eraser is or what 'crashed' means to you.

You can replace missing or damaged files from the recovery console.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %windir% or %systemroot%

"Eraser is a program that's been around a while for securely erasing
files, free space, etc. I never had a problem with it before, but this
time I set it to do one of those 35-pass wipes, and the hard drive
started making noise after about a day of constant erasing activity. I
finally got Windows to start to start, but it hung on the login screen
and said the the netlogon file was not on my machine.

I followed your suggestion and used the W2K CD to try boot into the
Recovery Console.

Well, that's what happened. So I guess the hard drive is fried.

Running chkdsk said "the volume contains unrecoverable problems".

Running fixboot said "boot sector cannot be found".

Running fixmbr said "the computer appears to have a non-standard or
invalid master boot record".

The only thing I would like to be able to recover are the My Documents
files. Aside from sending it to a recovery technician for several
hundred dollars and no guarantee anything might be recoverable, any
other ideas for accessing just those files, or am I SOL?

You really did this with no backups? That in of itself is amazing. Time to
get out the recovery software (if it's possible) The noise was probably disk
drive failure. The disk manufacturer's tools should confirm this.

Yeah, no back ups on this one computer. Have it and use it religiously
on my other three computers. But not this one. Sigh...

The disk seems to be working fine now. I just think it spazzed out
doing that erasing operation, and apparently did some file damage in the
process.

Any good recovery software you recommend?

Sorry. I haven't had to use any as yet so I can't really recommend one.
