I just upgraded my stand alone win2k server to be an
Active Directory server. Now I can't login to it. Did I
do something wrong? Is there way back into the server?
Please help, thanks

Debbie,

What exactly did you do? You had an WIN2000 Server that was a stand alone.
You used local accounts to log onto this server. Now, you have run dcpromo
on it that made it a Domain Controller. Unless I am seriously mistaken,
those local user account objects were 'converted' to domain user account
objects. You might have to try to log on as Administrator or as a member of
the Domain Admins group ( which, in this case is most likely simply the
Administrator account ).

So, if you were logging in directly to the server as Debbie ( or whatever )
when it was a stand alone and are now trying to log on directly to the
server using that account you are not going to be allowed to do this. You
will not have the log on locally right. If you were to install WIN2000
Professional or WINXP Professional on a 'workstation' you must assuredly
would be able to log on....decidedly not like you were before, however.

Check the path to userinit.exe in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit -
it should be "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," (including the comma)

Do you run anything like pcAnywhere or something that replaces the
MSGINA? If so, I would whack the GinaDLL key from HKLM\...\Winlogon as
well and use our GINA while troubleshooting.

If you are talking about a local logon, you can't. You can't do a local
logon to a DC.

The history: The server was an R7D server that we were
testing mail server apps on. Some of these servers apps
offered more functionality if run in an AD network. I
ran the AD Wizard. Now the account that I used all the
time to access this server now won't let me in. I can't
even login local as administrator. I am very close to
just formating the server and starting over, but I would
realy like to know what I did wrong.
Thanks for the help guys ;)
