Can't login to xp and F8 leads to select boot device message

Found similar cases in here about the sudden request for password login info
on windows xp that was never setup. The problem started after some automatic
updates to computer and cd check.

I got my computer at a computer show about 3yrs ago. I am not tech savvy but
ALL my work is on computer. Re-install not an option for me.

Not getting the ? option for hint
Not getting the Advanced option or Admin login options after F8 tap

I am getting a "Please select boot device" message

choices are:
1st floppy drive
pm-wdc wd1200bb-00guao
sm-sony cd-rw crx230ee

whatever this means.

Sound desperate? I am! Thanks.

Same problem here.
Going to Setup and setting a password for admin does not have any effect.
When clicking on Admin login flashes "Loading personal..." then the screen
flashes again with "Saving personal ..." and restores to login screen.

Even in safe mode with no passwords on it still presents a login screen that
I can't get pass.

This started after a system "upgrade".

BTW: The boot options are:
floppy
hard drive
CR-ROM
