Can't login (keyboard not functioning)

I have a Win XP laptop system (SP1) and I can't login because the keyboard
drivers apparently are not working or corrupt. I've tried connecting an
external keyboard (both USB and PS/2) without any luck. I get no response
from the keyboard whatsoever. I've tried to boot into the different SAFE
modes as well with the same outcome. I've tried to use a bootable disk to
gain access, but it will not load off of a bootable disk, it eventually
defaults back to the hard drive. Trying to go into the Recovery Console
results in the same problem. The keyboard is responsive throughout the POST,
but then dies once the OS takes over. Managing the laptop remotely through
Active Directory, I can see that there's a conflict with another device
(built-in touchpad), but in order to make changes in Device Manager, I have
to be logged on locally to the laptop. That brings me back to square one.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

When you boot into Safe Mode do you see the Administrators account? If
so hopefully there is no password asigned to it and the password can
be left blank, then click on it with with the mouse. Once in, go to
Device Manager and delete the keyboard, and close DM. Reboot the
system and let Windows redetect the keyboard.

Bert,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the problem is, I can't get past the
login splash screen because it is waiting on the CTRL ALT DEL keys to be
pressed before presenting me with the capability to enter or see any User,
password and domain field.

Hi GJ,

The only other thing I can think of is a in-place upgrade, and I am
not sure if this will fix the conflict for sure.
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q315341&ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

You may also want to contact the manufacturer in hopes of a simpler
solution.
