Keyboard Won't Work on Startup

K

Using XP Home, SP2 with a generic standard keyboard connected by either a
serial/parallel connector.

This problem just started. Same hardware and connection for years with no
trouble. Now the keyboard is in-op when I startup the machine. It is totally
dead. Only way I can get it to work is to select a disk scan (C drive),
shutoff the machine completely and then turn it back on.

XP trouble shooter says the driver may be corrupted and to reinstall the
keyboard driver via device manager. Trouble is I can't determine from the
list in device manager which is the keyboard. There's nothing I can find
with the word "keyboard" in it. I tried using another keyboard but it
didn't correct this problem. Please help me get my keyboard working again.
Thanks.

Do you mean a ps/2 keyboard???

If so, the ps/2 port could possibly be bad...
so try a USB keyboard

I uninstalled the driver "human interface device (HID) & restarted the
machine. The keyboard worked properly upon restart. So far so good. Don't
know if it will continue to work properly but I'm keeping my fingers
crossed. Many thanks for helping.

Look for a 'human interface device'
