Can't log off / Switch Users / Shut down.

T

Tim Haughton

I'm sure a lot of support messages start with "I was tweaking my
machine and...". And this one is no exception.

My laptop had been struggling a bit for speed, so I went in for some
savage pruning courtesy of the performance tweaks on tweakxp.com.

I uninstalled a load of stuff that wasn't really needed, and turned off
a few services that I thought I could live without. Shock. I now have a
problem.

There are two human user accounts, mine - an admin account, and my
wife's - a limited account. Not always, but occasionally, when I switch
users from my account to my wife's, she loses the ability to switch
back, shut down, log off, standby etc.. The only way to get out of it
is to do a hard shut down.

Any suggestions on what the culprit might be. This is an intermittent
problem.

WinXPSP2.

Cheers,

I have Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and the lastest Dell Precision
Workstation Bios (A07) and all updates on Windows. I still have problems
switching users or shutting down (computer locks up) although I have the
cursor but now Cntrl+Alt+Del reboot functionality.

I don't see that any information on the knowledgebase addresses my problem,
since everyone says to either update the bios of your computer or install the
latest Windows Service pack. I have all of that, and I still have these
problems with my product.

Note I can sometimes switch between 2 users but can't always open the third
user, and I try to log off one of the users so that I can open the third
user, the computer locks up at "Saving Settings."

Any ideas?

I'd suggest taking a llok at the system event logs. Click the Start button,
then go to Run and type (or copy and paste) the following:

eventvwr.msc /s

This will bring up the Event Viewer MMC add-on. Look through the Application
and System subcategories for any events that states an error, you will
notice these as the X in a red circle.
After you find one, most of the time there will be a hyperlink, click on it,
select Yes to the dialog box, and it will take you to the Help and Support
Center and provide information on that specific error event.

Thank you for your speedy response, Micah.

There's not a heck of a lot of info in the Event Viewer. All the episodes
seem to have share the same Source "Term Service" and the same ID: 1036

The message is:
"Terminal Server Session creation failed. The relevant staus code was
0xC0000037"
and when going to click on link and going to MS the message is
"No further information"

Micah,

I also tried searching the knowledge base for ID: 1036 and didn't see
anything relevant.

I have been seen exactly the same problem - frequent errors in th
event log for Term Service Event ID 1036 - error message: "Termina
Server session creation failed. The relevant status code was
0xC0000037.

I'm using fast user switching and also observe that I can occasionall
only have 2 users log in - attempts to login the 3rd user on my P
instantly return to the main Windows sign-in screen. I have notice
that if I login all 3 user IDs immediately after rebooting th
machine, it works OK. I've also noticed that on occasion I can'
login to the PC using Remote Desktop - the same terminal servic
error occurs

This problem began immediately after I installed Service Pack 2 on m
PC. Prior to that it was working fine; I did no other "tweaking".
FYI, I'm also running Norton System Works Premier and Zone Alar
firewall; Windows firewall is turned off

I'd appreciate it if you resolved your problem, or if you found an
new information. Thanks in advance
A
