Can't load access4.0 onto windowsXP, says need to update windows f

I need to load Access 4.0 so I can run 97 update, my system is Windows XP.
I keep getting the message that I need to update Windows for Workgroup.
I have a Access program that needs to stay in 97, but can't get 97 loaded to
work on it. Would appreciate any help I could get. THanks

I am going to guess here that your copy of MS Access 97 is an upgrade
version not a full version. It is looking for the older version so it can
verify that you qualify for using the newer, but now old, version 97.

Do you still have the Access 4.0 version that you could try and load?

There never was an Access 4.0. Access went from Access 2.0 (the last 16 bit
version) to Access 95 (the first 32 bit version). Access 95 was also known
as Access 7.0. The radical change in numbering was to get all versions of
the products in Office to the same number: the last 16 bit version of Office
was 4.2 or 4.3 (4.2 didn't include Access, 4.3 did), which included Access
2.0, Excel 5.0, Powerpoint 4.0 (I think) and Word 6.0
