Can't install updates

Can anyone tell me why I can't install updates. I have them to be
downloaded automatically. They do download, but when I try to install them
I get the message that updates can't install. That is all the error
message says and gives no reason why the installation failed. I am running
XP home. Thanks, Ray Holt

Alternatively, I would try installing them from Windows Update
(wupdmgr.exe).
