Can't install updates.

The company that "upgraded" my computer over a year ago
is out of business. They installed Windows XP
pro, "cleaned and upgraded everything". I have been
unable to install any windows updates. I've tried a
number of things. The computer downloads then just stops
and sits there and won't install the updates. Can't
install Java updates either. I'm afraid I have a pirate
copy. What now?
 
if all else fails use microsoft download site and manually download your updates
