Can't install software

Over the past three days, I have tried to install Adobe Pagemaker, Acrobat,
Photoshop, Quark. They are not the newest editions of these softwares. I put
the cd in the drive, the window opens showing me the files. I click on "set
up.exe." Nothing happens. I try using the control panel to "install new
software..." nothing happens. I've tried "run...." nothing happens. I have
been able to install Macromedia Contribute. Worked perfectly. Is this an
issue of software incompatibility? Is there something wrong with the drive -
I also cannot watch clips on a recorded dvd. Any ideas? Please help.

try copying the files from the cd to your computer...and then running
setup.exe

Well, I tried doing this and it didn't work either. The same thing happened.
I could see the files, but when I click on them, nothing happened. Thanks.
Any other ideas?
