Can't install RECOVERY CONSOLE after WinXP SP2

T

Ted Dang

I just reformatted and reinstalled WinXP but forgot to
install Recovery Console before installing SP2. Now, when
I run [drivedirectory]\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons I get an
error message: "Windows Setup \n\n Setup cannot continue
because the version of Windows on your computer is newer
than the version on the CD. \n\n Warning: If you decide to
delete the newer version of Windows that is currently
installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot
be recovered. \n\n To exit, click Cancel. For more
information, click Details."

Create a ew XP cd with SP2 slipstreamed into it. That should work, because
then your PC version is no longer 'older' then the CD version.

Thanks guys, I'm attempting this presently. You know,
there was a time when slipstreaming took some sweat &
tears...this is too easy.

Hi

You will need a slipstreamed SP2 CD to install the Recovery Console.
However the SP2 file is needed (266 MB). It can be downloaded from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-
9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Then use the following the article to create the SP2 slipstreamed CD:

You're welcome and yes, slipstreaming has been made a lot easier and

Is there any alternative? I don't have Microsoft .NET installed and
don't want to install it. As well, I already updated to SP2. Does this
preclude using the slipstreaming method?"

I would really prefer an alternative to this approach. Is there one?

D

Dan Epstein

Hi

Which Microsoft .NET are you referring to - .NET Framework?

Yes, I uninstalled .NET framework and this is a requisite to using the
proposed method. See "nLite also requires the .NET Framework to
function" at:

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

As I wrote, My question is whether there is an alternative. I don't
have Microsoft .NET installed and don't want to install it. As well, I
already updated to SP2. Does this already upgrading of WinXP home to
SP2 preclude using the slipstreaming method?

I would really prefer an alternative to this approach. Is there one?

Thanks!
Dan

Hi Dan

I didn't uninstall .NET Framework when used that method. It shouldn't
preclude using the slipstream method.

D

Dan Epstein

I uninstalled .NET Framework months ago! I just don't want to have to
REINSTALL it just to use the slipstream method. Hence my question. Is
there another method to install the recovery console other than the
slipstream method after installing SP2?

G

george

Since the software needed as recovery console for use in an SP2 system needs
to be at SP2 level too, there's no getting around it.
If you don't like making a slipstreamed CD in order to install the console,
why not copy your CD to HD, slipstream into that copy and run winnt32
/cmdcons from that copy?

Slipstreaming is easy. Even if you don't want to use NLite because of lack
of.NET support.
Here's how.

copy your CD-i386 folder to c:\i386. (include subfolders)
run the SP2 executable and add the /x option.
This will ask you into what folder to extract SP2. (say c:\sp2)
It won't install or slipstream, just extract.
Now run:
C:\sp2\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\
(don't add i386 to c:\, no need. by default the procedure looks for as a
subfolder to the one you name in the parameter).
Done.
Now you can run c:\i386\winnt32 /cmdcons to get the spacked(2) recovery
console.

or the recovery console

Will Denny

Hi Dan

No, you need SP2 to install the Recovery Console. The only way to have SP2
in the proper format is to create a slipstreamed SP2 CD. Without that, you
won't be able to install the Recovery Console whilst running SP2.

D

Dan Epstein

I like this idea!

OK, let me ask a couple of questions, inline:
copy your CD-i386 folder to c:\i386. (include subfolders)

but I have a C:\i386 folder. Are you suggesting that I overwrite it
with the i386 folder on my WinXP SP1 CD?

So let's say I copy my WinXP CD to I:\WinXP and in I:\WinXP-CD is the
I386\ folder that came with the WinXP CD.

What are you suggesting?
run the SP2 executable and add the /x option.

So execute the 200MB SP2 .exe file I download from MS and add the /x
option.
This will ask you into what folder to extract SP2. (say c:\sp2)

OK. I'll use I:\sp2
It won't install or slipstream, just extract.
Now run:
C:\sp2\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\

I'll run I:\sp2\i386\update\update.exe -s:I:\WinXP-CD
(don't add i386 to c:\, no need. by default the procedure looks for as a
subfolder to the one you name in the parameter).
Done.
Now you can run c:\i386\winnt32 /cmdcons to get the spacked(2) recovery
console.

OK, so I'm still confused about the role of my WinXP CD in this
procedure, and in my scenario what should I execute as the command right
above? Can you clarify?

Thanks,
Dan

D

Dan Epstein

Well, I tried it as I described below but with the same results.

If I follow your recommendation I overwrite my c:\i386 folder with the
older one on the CD that came with my computer. I therefore modified
your recommended procedure.

Dan

george

Dan,

As far as Ican make out you got there in the end.
Maybe to clarify somewhat more.
The idea of copying the CD to HD (be it the original one, or the already sp1
slipstreamed one, doesn't matter) is to have entire sources available for
slipstreaming and thus coming up with a complete set of files, potentially
to be burned onto a CD again, so as to save the 'update' hasstle in case of
a reinstall.

Generically this could loook like:

copy CD to <drive>\<cdsources> /x
sp2.exe /x into <drive>\<sp2files>
<drive>\<sp2files>\i386\update\update.exe -s<drive>\<cdsources>

Actually, the other day I found (a little late) that the sp2-executable has
a new parameter that eliviates the seperate extraction process and
integrates directly into the sources. The above would then become:

copy CD to <drive>\<cdsources>
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU /integrate:<drive>\<cdsources>

hope this doesn't add to the confusion :)))

cheers

Dan,

As far as Ican make out you got there in the end.

Actually, I didn't. It didn't work. I'm still getting the same error:

"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer
is newer than the version on the CD.

"Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is
currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be
recovered."

I'm sorry--I was following the procedure too rapidly. I forgot a colon
in -sI:\WinXP-CD

When I did it correctly, I get the error messgage,

"Service Pack 2 Setup

"This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has
integrated Software Updates.

"Consult the Service Pack documentation for more details about supported
integration scenarios."

My CD is a Dell OS Reinstallation CD which looks and feels like the
WinXP installation CD.

And the WinXP-CD folder that I'm using when I run
I:\sp2\i386\update\update.exe -s:I:\WinXP-CD

is copied right off of the CD.

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks already "george" for your help
(and sorry for my previous typo!).

Dan

george

Then you don't have a retail-CD but one from a major OEM (HP, COMPAC, etc)
that have custom built their CD to integrate (usually) special drivers and
the like into their CD.
I think you're out of luch with that. Don't have a reference handy for it
but saw webpages to that effect.

sorry, can't help you further here.
