can't install programs

After using registry cleaner (trial) my system is really screwed up.

explorer [not ie] will not open (initiate) any .exe file for installation.
The error sez “xxxx.exe has generated error and will be closed by windows.
Need to restart program.
Or it attempts to start and a series of 10 or 12 beeps and stalls.
Or I try to download a file for installation (and use the open file) method
and the same thing happens.

Win 2000pro, Pentium 4,160 gig hd.

Use your ERD to return to the previous state. Of course System State must have been
checked whenever this was completed.

If you do not have a current ERD, try rebooting to Safe Mode (F8), and choose Last
Known Good Configuration.

If this does not work, you will need to complete an Upgrade Installation...
