My machine had to be restored. I loaded all of the patches & updates. My machine hangs up during shutdown. The only way I can turn it off is via power plug. Through research, I'm pretty sure I need the Patch Q307274. It was initially in the initial windows xp service pack 1. When I go to microsoft knowledge base to get it and click on the download icon, it brings me to the windows update screen. I search through windows catalog to find it but I can't. How can I get it from the archives? Also, when I go to add/remove programs in my computer to find the xp service pack 1 and I can't find it. Why wouldn't it be there? Since I can't find it in my computer, I went to reinstall xp ser pack 1a (now that because you can't get the other) thinking maybe it didn't install right through windows update and windows update says its in my computer, but I can't find it. What's going on? Does any one have an answer? I especially need help getting the patch! Thanks! cg

SHUTDOWN HANGS ON "SAVING YOUR SETTINGS"
During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the "saving
your settings" screen. During such a hang, there is no response to
Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be
intermittent.

This is a known bug in Windows XP, for which Microsoft has a supported fix.
To learn how to get this patch, see MSKB 307274, "Windows XP Stops
Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown." The necessary patch is included
in Windows XP Service Pack 1, and also is now available on the Windows
Update site under "Recommended Updates" for Win XP Professional, titled
"Restarting Windows XP." However, to find it, you may need to reconfigure
how Windows Update appears for you, by enabling the Windows Update Catalog
as follows: At the Windows Update page, click Personalize Windows Update at
the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. Save your settings.
This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box. Click this link,
then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems. Pick Windows XP in
the drop-down list, click Search, take Recommended Updates, and find the
"Restarting Windows XP" patch which references Q307274.

As a workaround, newsgroup correspondent "lou" resolved this problem by
dismantling the Windows XP logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click
User Accounts, then click "Change the way users log on or off." Uncheck the
box that says "Use the Welcome screen." This removes the initial logon
screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic
logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.

OK I found the patch. Unfortunately, that patch goes with a different version of windows xp than what I'm running. I'm running xp home edition sp1 (that one was for xp rtm). I am having the same problem that they talk about in the article that was suggested. Also, I tried the workaround Lou suggested and it doesn't work. Since windows is shutting down ok could it be something else? I have a 540n hp with windows preinstalled and no cd restore disks--everything is in the computer. It's running xp's firewall, its virus and parasite clean. Any suggestions? cg
