I am having various problems since a crash on my relatively new XP machine.
Here's the latest. Can you help me with an answer ?
Last week I tried to boot my XP machine.
I got a message on the screen that said: "NTLDR is missing, press
CTR-Alt-Del to reboot". Every time I pressed Ctr-Alt-Del I got the same
message. I put in my installation disk & I tried "F3". It said "Windows XP
is not completely set up on your computer. If you quit setup now, you will
need to run setup again to set up Windows XP". The computer restarted and
entered Windows setup again.
I tried "set up Windows XP press ENTER". I picked the choice "Leave the
current file system intact (no changes)". What I then had was XP in it's
original configuration, but all my files were intact.
I am now in the process of configuring my machine the way I had it before it
crashed.
Where I have gotten stuck is re-installing Norton AntiVirus from the
Applications disk that came with the computer.
Norton antiVirus will install, but only partially. I can run the main
program and scan my machine for viruses. None are found. Here's what will
NOT install:
The part of the program that checks for viruses in real time
(Auto-Protect);
the tray icon that I believe is related to Auto-Protect does not
install;
E-mail Scanning;
during repeated attempts at installation I am told that "Common Client
does not fully install.
After each attempt at installation the computer asks to reboot, which I do.
When the machine reboots I get the message that Norton AntiVirus did not do
a good install and the program needs to revert to an old configuration. I
am offered the option of going to the Symantec website. When I did, I was
offered the option of running an AntiVirus scan from the website. I did,
and no viruses were found.
I then followed several procedures suggested by the website. For instance,
I downloaded two registry keys, put them in Program Files > Symantec Common
Files (I think), and then deleted two keys from HKEY LOCAL MACHINE >
Programs > Software > Symantec (I think).
None of the suggestions they offered changed what happens, that is, I get a
partial installation and the same error message.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do next ? I am really
out of ideas.
