cant install defender

i have downloaded defender ok.
i run the file and it get as far as the install window then i hear a little
ping as if there was an error and thats it the program doesnt install and the
only way to close the window is to ctrl/alt del, i get no error codes it just
freezes

Is the Windows Installer 3.1 installed? You should be able to see this in
the list (near the end) in add or remove programs, in control panel.
