Can't install and USB printers

Replaced a parallel printer with a Lexmark USB. Using the install CD, plugged
in the USB at the proper point, got "Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)".
Took back the Lexmark, got an HP PS7450. Using the CD, plugged in the USB at
the proper point, got the found new hardware wizard. If I cancel the wizard,
it will eventually time out with no communication. If I follow the wizard, I
get the same CRC error. The only other USB device was a cable modem, but I
moved it to ethernet and uninstalled the s/w. I've tried multiple USB ports.
Am running a Dell Dimension 4550 with XP-SP2. I've disable the serial and
parallel ports in CMOS, updated the BIOS, uninstalled everything printer
related, deleted the HP folders, tried different cables, downloaded and
installed from C:, and also borrowed a Dell 720 printer. Any ideas short of
reloading XP? Thanks. David

Just a thought, is USB 2.0 enabled in your BIOS and is your printer plugged
in to a USB 2.0 port?

In requirements, the printer only specifies a USB port, not a version. I'm
using a 2.0 cable. I've always found Dell's BIOS options a little lacking.
The only USB options are Enable and Emulation. Both are on. I have tried
several of the six ports. Thanks for the suggestions. Just noticed the typo
in my topic. It s/b "any".

A possible suspect is your CD drive.. CRC's occur when a file being
transferred is seen as damaged or corrupted.. for more on the CRC error,
read the link below..

Note near the end of my first post that I downloaded the same version from HP
and installed from C:. That should have eliminated that problem. Thanks for
the info, though!

Open Device Manager :: Enhanced Controller

Expand the list for USB and see if there's an "!" next to any item. Also
check that there's an "enhanced controller" listed under USB. If there's an
! or no "enhanced", disconnect all USB devices, then right click each item
listed in Device Manager under USB, one at a time, select uninstall and
remove all of them.

Reboot and let XP reinstall the ports. Now see if the printer will install.

If that doesn't work, run a system file check:
click | start | run
type in: sfc /scannow
(put a space between sfc and /)
<OK>

sfc will check all system files and replace any that are corrupted or
missing. It may ask you to insert your XP CD into the drive.

The only item showing an ! was the printer. I uninstalled it and all the USB
controllers, reinstalled them by rebooting, then ran sfc. The next printer
driver installation ran the same as always. I guess it's XP reinstall time.
