Can't import AVI file from ATI Multimedia Center

R

Robert M. Lincoln

I created an *.avi file from ATI MultimediaCenter (a software program that
comes along with ATI's TV tuner card). The file plays fine on Windows Media
Player v. 10, but I can't import it into Windows Movie Maker.

The error message says I need a codec. I checked the option that says
automatically download codecs as needed. But that didn't solve the problem.
Where can I get this codec, that apparently is built into Windows Media
Player v. 10

By the way, on my laptop, that has Windows Media Player v. 10 installed,
when I try to play this file, I get no video, just the audio? Any reason
for this?

Thanks

Hi Robert;
It is possible that the ATI program used a proprietary CODEC that is not
recognized by Windows Movie Maker.
There are some compression CODECs that Windows Media Player can resolve, but
Windows Movie Maker cannot. This Knowledge Base Article;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308464
describes this condition, as well as provides a link to download more
CODECs. These CODECs may or may not help this situation.
You may also want to visit the Windows Movie Maker site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx
To make sure that you have the latest version of the program installed.
Newer versions may have additional CODECs that may help.

In addition to that information, there are a few things I can think of that
may be causing this;
1) You may need to visit ATI's site to see if they provide the proper CODEC
to utilize with Windows Movie Maker.
2) I do not know what the content of the AVI file is, but you may be running
into a licensing issue. The media that you are working with may be licensed
for viewing, and thus WMP would have the CODEC for that, but recording of the
material is prohibited, and therefore the CODEC WMM would need to accomplish
this is not available.

As far as the laptop issue, you may want to try to re-copy the file ove
there, or again this may be a licensing issue. That is, the file is able to
recognize a different hardware set up, and is prohibiting play as this would
be in essence, a copy.

Hope that helps;
Jeff
