Can't get to "Add/Remove Windows Components"

M.Hockings

My XP is fully updated and is running fine more or less. I just added a
fax card and wanted to turn on the fax handling in WinXP. The help says
to go to add/remove programs in control panel, click on add/remove
windows components then select fax services and follow the directions on
screen. No problem you would think.

However clicking on the add/remove windows components causes a message:

sysocmgr.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK
to terminate the application.

The only option is the OK button.

Any ideas on what I can do to I fix this?

Hi Mike,

See if extracting Sysoc.inf file from Windows XP CD-ROM helps. First, backup
the existing sysoc.inf file to a safe location. Then, try this:

Insert the Windows XP CD in the drive.

Click Start/Run and type CMD
In the Command Prompt, type this line:

expand X:\i386\sysoc.in_ -r c:\windows\inf

Where X:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter. The above command assumes Windows is
installed in C:\ drive. If not, change the drive letter / Path accordingly.

Example: expand H:\i386\sysoc.in_ -r g:\windows\inf

Hi Ramesh,

Thanks for the suggestion but it didn't seem to make any change. I also
found that I get the same error if I go to settings->printers and
faxes then try to set up faxing from there.

I guess it is either live with this or reload XP again?

Mike,

Although I don't have any idea why this happens, 0xc0000005 may denote an
"Access Violation" error. See if logging on as built-in Administrator helps.
If not, try a clean boot troubleshooting.
