can't get pc to hibernate

I have windows XP sp2, Sometimes in hibernation mode the shut down process
gets as far as "preparing to hibernate" and then the screen freezes. I then
have to use the on-off button to close the pc. Can anyone help in rectifying
this problem? I can copy the system information details to here if that will
help.
