Can't get past user icons

Vista has run fine for about a year on my machine. But over past few months,
sometimes when I boot up, it takes me to the user icon screen and then locks
up. Cursor moves, clicking user icons and start icon "pops" them, but
nothing happens. Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work. I must push power button to shut
down. Sometimes will be OK next time, sometimes several on-offs necessary.
Will start in safe mode ok. Have used that to do system restore, but that
didn't help. Situation is becoming more frequent.

Thanks, but when I located SFC.exe and double clicked it, the screen just
blinked, nothing more. Did that blink mean it did its work that fast?
Anyway, the problem remains. This morning I downloaded lastest MS updates,
restarted as directed, then had to hard boot three times in order to get past
the welcome screen.

1. On the Start menu, click "All Programs".
2. Click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator" from the
shortcut menu.
4. When the User Account Control dialog appears, click "Continue".
5. Now run sfc /scannow

Thanks, Dave. But SFC found no integrity problems. So sounds like my
Winlogon file is OK. Any other ideas?
