Can't get past PCAnywhere login screen

I have been using PCAnywhere for many years, so I am fairly familiar with its
operations, etc. However, I recently have tried to connect to a host
computer and cannot get past the PCAnywhere login screen. It "almost"
connects, in that it says it has connected and now wanting a PAAnywhere user
name and password. I have verified both many times on both the host and
remote computers. When I try to connect, it just keeps coming back to the
login screen. Here are the details of each computer.

Host computer............Windows XP Home. No router, just a direct
connection to Frontier'sTelephone DSL. PCAnywhere 10.5. Computer "user" has
full administrator rights, but not the default administrator. No user
password required to boot the computer. In PCAnywhere, both the user name
and password have valid entries.

Remote computer...........Windows XP Pro. On a 3Com router with both 5631 &
5632 ports opened, powered by Road Runner Cable. PCAnywhere 10.5. Computer
"user" is default administrator with a password. In PCAnywhere, the same
user name and password is entered and matches the PCAnywhere user name and
password of the Host computer. Am using the WAN IP address to try to connect
to the Host, as verified from www.whatismyip.com, and also from c:\ipconfig
/all.

The remote computer is able to connect to other computers using PCAnywhere,
so I believe that the remote setting are correct. It must be some setting or
configuration in the Host computer, perhaps?

Thanks,

Is the Home edition running SP2? If so, is windows firewall enabled?
Norton Internet Security also affects this. Disbale ANY kind of
client-side firewall. Try the procedure in reverse, connect to the XP
Pro machine from XP Home. Recheck the Host authentication. It must be
set to "Windows Authentication."

Dear (e-mail address removed)

Thanks for your reply.

The home edition is SP2. The firewall is tuned off. Other than Norton
Anti-Virus, there is not any Norton Internet Security. I had that turned off
too. PcAnysherer Host set to "Windows Authentication". I can ping with the
firewall down, cannot ping with the firewall up. Still won't get past the
invalid login name and password, which I verified many times again.

My problem is that the host computer is two hours away, and operated by my
81 year old father, who lives in a nursing home. So getting all the testing
done (both ways) is a major task. So very difficult to test it backwards or
in reverse too.

Besides PCAnywhere, are there any "easy" ways to connect. Since he has
Windows XP Home, I can't use Remote Desktop, unless there is some easy way to
add that feature after the fact now.

I have used GOTOMeeting at work, but that is when vendors dial in, and I
believe that there is a subscription fee for that?

Any further advice would be most welcome.
