can't get my web pages out of notepad

G

Guest

Help. I was using notepad to save google adsense code links to a few web
pages in my web site. Don't have a clue what I did along the way, but, now I
cannot open or edit my web pages in front page 2003 without the page being
popped up in notepad. Right there inside of my site! Like, a previous
writer had difficulty with Mword, but, I can't figure how to get notepad out
of my web site and editing back to normal....

I think: Tools | Options | Configure Editors and uncheck the box that says
Open in Office application that created them - something like that. But
maybe you associated htm/html extension with Notepad (in the same place) as
your default editor - so check that too when you're in Configure
Editors...html/htm should be set to FrontPage.

Hey, Crash,
If I did, do that -- associate htm, html with Notepad, it was not in a
knowing manner, I never typed Notepad onto or into anything, it just seemed
to follow me home like a lost puppy, as I pasted and copied the google
adsense links as per the google instructions. However -- here is a clue --
the last few days before I realized I was in deep doodoo, I did, notice that
when I opened Notepad, that it was already containing and filled with script,
instead of the usual blank page.
Sorry to be so long-telling the story but, I am really worried that even
if I publish the site to local drive, that the Notepad is going to hang on or
be in there like a barnacle on a crab....

hmmmm...

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools | Internet Options | Programs do you
have Notepad set as HTML editor there?

before my boo-boo, it was microsoft office 2003, then suddenly, it was
notepad and when I tried to change it back, notepad wouldn't move. then I
followed instructions in tools, configure editors and suddenly the Internet
toolbar is back to normal, with Microsoft Office 2003 as HTML editor.
But....in the web site, the pages are still like this: when I open the
site, and open a page for editing, instead of the page opening as per normal,
the notepad pop-up window appears and so far I haven't seen or can't get the
regular "Design" view to appear anyhow, way, shape or form...

meanwhile, I thought I would ask.....can somebody tell me exactly how, the
window in "configure editors" is supposed to look?
.....should it read frontpage 2003 HTML (default) and what is the frontpage
(never open) feature mean?

(please, help..I will, return the favor...)

Try Opening "FrontPage" then
Tools | Options
New window | Configure Editors tab
In the left pane select "htm, html, dhtml, dwt....
In the right pane select FrontPage then click the button for "Make Default"

My entry in FP2003 for Configure Editors -> htm html dhtml ..... is
FrontPage (Open as HTML) (Default)
FrontPage (Open as text)
Notepad

FrontPage (Never Open) means "Never open in FrontPage". If that is
showing, delete it. (Black X top right of Editors panel).

G

Guest

Oh heck. I went through there in configure editors and deleted anything that
had notepad showing in the editor's box. Left all the editors relating to
Frontpage 2003. I am scared of what I'll find when I try to open in design
view.

G

Guest

So, when I panicked and got antsy and went through the configure editors
extensions and deleted anytime I came across notepad in the editors box at
the other side...., I only aggravated my problem?

R

Ronx

I do not think the problem would be aggravated - I never use Notepad
for editing any web related file, except Perl scripts - and FrontPage
(text only) is just as good.
Have you tried Help->Detect and Repair from the FrontPage menu ?

J

John Malone

You could try...

With FrontPage closed, find and delete the cmdui.prf file for FrontPage -
this is the file that stores your customizations and preferences for the
FrontPage Menu and it will get rebuilt, using the defaults, the next time
you start FrontPage.

Just a thought... Looks like you might have to reinstall anyway.
