Cant get my UPDATE to update?

Hi - ne1 help? I can't get Windows Update to work right -
It downloads the update, then fails to install them. ( My
windows is legal, the computer doesn't crash, just doesn't
carry on with the install, virus free, spyware free).
I'm stumped..............

Download the main updates (Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1, etc.) "manually", and install them. Then try to
run Windows Update again.
