I also have a sleep problem with my new tower computer running Vista Home
Premium. I CAN get it to sleep, or to hibernate, using both the Start menu
and keyboard shortcut buttons, however, it immediately wakes up from either.
I am forced to shut down completely to turn it off.

FYI - researching the same problem on these forums and discovered a post
describing changing power management settings in network adapters in Device
Manager: Intel (R) 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection on my system. There
is an option under Properties where you can un-check "Allow this device to
wake the computer." Seemed to do the trick - I can "sleep" the computer and
it stays asleep. This is a REAL obscure fix for a problem that seems to be
not uncommon with a fairly evident solution to those whose business is
hardware and software, and one I'm sure Granny or Uncle Bob would not have
been able to track down to save their lives - I'm honored to be an unpaid,
non-volunteer MS Vista beta-tester... :)

Good suggestion. However, going to the power management section of my
network adapter (Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
(NDIS 6.0)), I find the box unchecked which allows it to awaken system from
sleep. I disabled the adapter completely, and still the system re-awakens
instantly after going to sleep. As a former MacOS person, I am wondering
whether Windows is around to serve its user, or the other way around!
(Okay, just a little venting; thanks for listening.) Could it be some other
component of the computer is causing this issue?

Windows Sleep is broken. Confirmed by Microsoft.

Do a Google on vista sleep broken and read for yourself.
