Can't get Java JRE to work

I am trying to initiate the real time chat and other
programs using Sun Java latest download. The download from
Sun appears to have worked fine but when I test the
virtual machine I get the MS screen that I must download
Java Virtual Machine. I am using 98 with IE 6.0. I have
checked the browser settings to ensure Sun Java is checked
and MS VM is unchecked, also ensured the Java console has
IE checked. I have Java scripting on low safety. I am at a
loss. Any ideas?
