Can't get into safe mode, usb keyboard not recognized?

I have a Compaq Presario 5000, bought in 2001. I cannot get into safe mode.
I have pressed F8 (also F5) repeatedly, and constantly, while windows boots,
before it boots and in every possibility. I also cannot get into the bios
config. The keyboard is a USB on a USB hub. When the computer 1st boots,
it gives a brief message like there is no keyboard.

1. Anyone think maybe the keyboard is not recognized during the critical
time to get into safe mode?

2. How do I solve this? I have to get into safe mode.

You may need to borrow a PS/2 keyboard to get into the BIOS and check your settings there. Does
your keyboard have a USB-PS/2 adapter you could use this.Once you get into the BIOS you will want to
look for an entry that looks like "Legacy USB support" or "USB keyboard support" and make sure it is
enabled.

This is actually a friend's computer. He did not have the adapter, but I
bet I could find one. If not, I bet I can borrow a PS/2 keyboard. I
suspected this might be the problem when I posted, but I didnt want to drive
back out there without some confirmation. Thanks very much.
