Can't get DVD drive to read DVDs! (GIGABYTE)

I installed a new CD/DVD combo drive, but unfortunately we can't get
DVDs (movies or data) to read!

It DOES read CDs -- I installed all the Nero and PowerDVD software that
came with the new drive, then followed all the instructions to make
sure we have the latest driver and software updates (Windows is also up
to date).

I also used a Windows tool to check that we had a codec(?) installed.

It's GIGABYTE drive.

Many thanks!

Didn't the drive come with a software CD?
WinXP doesn't have any native ability to read DVDs.

Thanks for that -- we have no error messages. The drive is doing
something when a DVD is inserted (the light blinks), but nothing else!

No error messages when trying to access a (data) DVD via Explorer?
The posted MSKB articles didn't help either?

Is it also a DVD burner? If so will it burn DVDs (with 3rd party
software). Maybe the DVD hardware is bunged up.
