Can't get documents off drive?

Hi all,

I have a computer that needs rebuilding from scratch.
However, I need the data files under the "pam" account.
So, I took the hard drive out and put it in another XPH
machine and connected as slave and booted the
computer. The machine booted up and logged me in
as "owner" an administrative account. The second
drive showed up as "F" drive. I went to the pam
directory under Documents and Settings and when I
clicked on the directory I get the following:

F:\Documents and Settings\pam is not accessable.

Access is denied. (with a bit white x on a red button.)

I realize this is a permissions problem but I don't
know how to get around it. I think it has something
to do with taking ownership but I don't remember
how to do it. I think the same thing happens even
when I am logged in as the real administrator.

any pointers so I can copy the files to another hd?

thanks,
charles.......

In KB307874 how to disable simple file sharing, it says to go to
the "advanced settings" in step 3. My window does NOT have
that choice. Therefore I can't get the security tabs to show up.
Any other ideas?

thanks....

If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode in order to gain access to
the Security tab. You'll also need to logon with an account
that is a Computer Administrator.

To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has
administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File
Sharing. By default, Windows XP Professional uses Simple File sharing when
it is not joined to a domain.

For additional information about how to do this, click the following article

and set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP

Hope this Helps,

Simon.

First, thanks for your help guys.

I got the problem solved.

I had to boot into "administrator" and then the security tab showed up.
It did NOT show up when I booted into a regular account that had
administrative privilages however.

Now that the files are backed up, I can do a full hardware diag of the
whole computer since the reason for this is that is shuts down at random
anywhere from half a minute to several minutes. I thought it might be a
virus at first but now I am thinking hardware: cpu, ram, mb, hd etc....
I ran the ram checker for over an hour so it isn't ram. Next to check is
a destructive diag of the hd, WD 80G IDE. I plugged in the power
supply checker and it came up ok. Doesn't mean that the ps is ok but
as a last resort, I will exchange it for a new one. This happens to be an
eMachine. Seems to be a lot of them going bad lately.

thanks again......
