Can't get backround color on my browser

I have had my toshiba laptop for about 3 weeks and have
recently realized that web pages are not displaying
background color with any of my
browsers. I have tried all the obvious steps of going to internet
options, and making sure everything is set correctly in the color tab
and accessibility tab. And I still cannot
get the body bgcolor or backdround to appear on my
webpage. I'm faced with reinstalling the system which I'd rather not
go through if I don't have to. I see from the newgroups that this
problem has been around for a number of years with windows xp. Does
anyone have a fix for this?

Hi,

Under Internet Options on the general tab click the "accessibility" button
near the bottom. Make sure none of the "ignore...." options are selected.

"I see from the newgroups that this problem has been around for a number of
years with windows xp."

Really? I've been here a number of years and rarely see this problem.
Frankly though, it's not actually an XP problem per se, as it is nearly
always the result of users monkeying with their settings and then being
unable to remember what they changed.

Rick.
No one has "monkeyed around" with the settings. It was this way right out of
the box. None of the options in the accessibility page are checked. What
other reasons could be causing this problem?

Hi,

Are you the same person that asked the original question? Since you are
using a different interface and name it is difficult to tell. If you are
not, you should start your own thread and be consistent in the responses. If
you are the same person, read on:

There are other reasons, such as a style sheet being in use. If it affects
more than one browser (not just multiple instances of IE, but Opera,
Firefox, and Netscape as well), then the cause is system-wide, and
reinstalling it unlikely to resolve it. Was it truly like this "out of the
box"? Or did it change somewhere along the line and you just noticed it?
Have you tried disabling plug-ins from loading with the browser?

Rick.
I've begun this thread in both Google and MS support with email
addresses. I'll stay consistent here.
It was truely this way out of the box. All I did was reload my previous
documents and emails and install Quark and a couple other programs on
the new computer. If there is a "style sheet" mucking up the works, how
does one turn it off? As far as plug in's, you'll have to direct me to
where they are and how to turn them off.
thank you

Hi,

I don't use or know enough about Quark to advise you there, so you may want
to check its settings to see if they are interfering.

Style sheets are under the accessibility options where you have already
been.

Disabling plug-ins instructions I wrote on here:
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#plugin

"Out of the box" implies that this problem occured from the moment you
recieved the machine with the fresh, clean installation. If the problem
started after the transfer of files or installation of additional software,
then the problem isn't with the OS but is rather with one of the installed
programs.

Just to be sure I understand what you're saying.....that fresh installs
of software on to this brand new laptop, even though IE is the only
program open at the time, can interfere with IE in this manner? Even
though the software wasn't causing any problems on the previous laptop?
Are you also saying that documents that were backed up and reloaded on
the new computer could also possibly be causing a problem? Are we
talking virus? Could a corrupt file cause this kind of problem??

Hi,

Yes, they can. One reason why you are always warned to close all running
programs while installing software.
Even though the software wasn't causing any problems on the previous
laptop?

Yes again. Perhaps (and I'm guessing here), the software was installed on
the previous system under proper conditions.
Are you also saying that documents that were backed up and reloaded on
the new computer could also possibly be causing a problem?

Probably not, but a program copied over without installing could.
Are we talking virus?

Doesn't sound like one.
Could a corrupt file cause this kind of problem??

Sure, corrupt files can do all sorts of damage and manifest themselves in
very odd ways.
