Can't get an app to work (Registry problem)?

I have installed Photoshop CS2 on my machine a number of times and I can
never get it to recognize its' own native file types (*.psd). However, I
installed the exact same version on my other PC - and it works fine. Both
machines are running XP Pro, SP-2 and have 1GHz processors and 512MB ram.
Both installations show 217.00MB in size in Add/Remove Programs. I'm
convinced my problem is in the Registry. Can anyone offer some help?
Thanks......

Open Explorer, then click on Tools, next select Folder Options, click to the
File Types tab and scroll down to see what application is registered for the
..psd extension. Change it if necessary.

All is as it should be - psd files are supposed to open with Photoshop CS2.
That isn't the problem.

Do not want to insult, but I just installed PhotoShop Elements and during
the install I had a choice of the file formats to be opened by Elements. Is
it possible that you did not pick the .psd format?

No insult taken. I think I have a very unique problem. I had a choice also
during install. When I checked what would open a psd file, Photoshop CS2
was the app.

When you say Photoshop doesn't "recognize" *.psd files, what exactly do
you mean? When you double click a *.psd file, does Photoshop open but
fail to open the file? Or does Photoshop simply fail to open?

It's the other way around - with Photoshop opened, I find a legacy *.psd
file and try to open it. The thumbnail of the file briefly shows at the
bottom of the dialog box - then I get a message which says the file can't be
found. Strange that it showed the thumbnail - but said it couldn't find it.

I haven't tried clicking on a *.psd file to see what happens. I will in a
little while.
