When I'm trying to run REGEDT32.EXE only the regular Regedit.exe opens.
What's going on ?
(winXPpro)

What features can't you find? Regedit on XP can do a lot of things that it
could not do in earlier versions of Windows, including most things that I know
of that you used to need to use Regedt32 for. I can remember opening both
Regedit and Regedt32 at once to do things like load a hive, search for data,
connect to remote registries, set permissions (things that various earlier
versions of one or the other could not both do - but now regedit can do them
all).

I'm trying to add W3SVC to DependOnService. So I click on it, I get the
window, add the service and when when clicking OK, I get an error saying
that I cannot modify the registry. I went back and set all users
authorization to total control (just to see if it makes a difference) and I
get the same error.

Now, what am I looking for in Regedt32 ? I saw pictures (google search)
where the toolbar contains other menus like Options and 3 or 4 others, I
don't have that. In fact, when browsing
to Windows/system32 directory, I have regedt32.exe at only 3.5 Kb while
regedit.exe is nowhere to be seen. If I enter regedit.exe in the execute
command, I get the same program.

So if I was really using regedt32 I would be able to modify the registry and
it's not the case.

You should find 'regedit.exe' in %systemtoot% directory and regedt32.exe in
%systemtoot%\system32 directory. If not you can expand new copies from your
install media.

If I try to add a key, dword or anything, (edit/new) regedt32 I get an error
saying I cannot write or edit the registry.

I went into Windows safe mode, administrator account and got the same
result.

It's weird. It's like I do not have authorization to change anything in
registry whatever user account I use.

Can you post the exact text of the error?

It's in french (canadian :)), so first the original version then my
translation :

Impossible de modifier DependOnService : erreur lors de l'écriture du
nouveau contenu de la valeur

Impossible to modify DependOnService : an error occur in writing the new
content in the value

This article may help.

How to Restore the Default NTFS Permissions for Windows 2000

The article is a little deceptive. At step 7 create a new database.
