Hi; I have XPHome and have been trying to remove unnecessary programs from
my OS
and from startup. I removed (uninstalled) a program "Schmail", that I tried
for a short time and thought all files were removed since it is not in the
Start menu or in the Program files in my hard drive. Mscomfig shows a
listing of this software in the startup menu, so using regedit I went to
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, where it is listed as
residing and
could not find it anywhere, either in the "Run" "Run Once" or "Run
Disabled"subfolders.
There is a listing in all these three subfolders named"Default" which I do
not know what it refers to. How can I delete this entry (file?) from the
startup menu? Thanks.Josie

If you have disabled it by unchecking in MSConfig, the entry has been
moved to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSconfig
\startupreg
as a subkey, which you can easily recognise to delete

Alex, when I went into the registry, on the right side under
startupreg\Schmail I found 6 listings . Two of them had the word Schmail
(command and key) in them so I deleted them but the other four did not and
am afraid to delete them (even though they are in the Schmail folder)
unless you think it is safe. The four are:"Default", "hkey", "inimapping"
and "key". Under the "Data" column the listing for each (in the same order
before):for Default - (value not set); for hkey - HKCU; for inimapping - 0
and for key - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CuurentVersion\Run. Please let me
know if you think I can delete them.
Also if I may abuse your generosity, I'd like for you to comment on the
following: In the same startupreg folder and below the Schmail subfolder I
found the entry "SiSUSBRG" (which is also in my startup msconfig menu) with
similar listings to Schmail on the right side:default, command, hkey,
inimapping, item and key. Is it a necessary item? Can it be deleted? I
searched it in Google and it said something about a sound card driver for
Win XP. Thanks for your help. Josie

These things in registry are not actually folders, though the
presentation makes it look that way. Those items on the right are not
files, but the data held about Schmail in the Schmail 'key' on the left
(which might also have sub-keys in the left pane folder like structure
as well). What you need do is delete the whole key - highlight Schmail
on the left and hit Delete (and confirm).

If ever in doubt, first highlight and use the File - Export to 'export
the key to a file' - then you can put it back. Not necessary in the
specific case, but an export after highlighting the whole Uninstall
afterwards might pay, in case you remove another entry without meaning
to

That was because the recent server troubles lost a lot of my posts, so
when I did not find them 24 hours later, I re-posted. The originals
seem by Murphys law to have caught up an hour or so later
